Public History in the Middle East

While public history is well-established in many regions, it remains in its relative infancy within Middle Eastern studies. This conference seeks to map the current state of public history in the Middle East and foster dialogue on its challenges, opportunities, and intersections with broader social, political, and cultural processes.

Locating Palestine in the Arab Americas

This workshop, co-organized by The Middle East and North Africa Centre at the University of Sussex, the Centro de Estudios Árabes at the University of Chile, and the Khayrallah Center, sought to establish the centrality and cultural significance of Palestinians in the Arab Americas and the greater American mahjar.

Middle East Migration Studies: Taking Stock, Plotting New Paths

The Khayrallah Center, in conjunction with the editors of the Mashriq & Mahjar: Journal of Middle East and North African Migration Studies, hosted a workshop that offered critical reflections on the core debates and methodologies of MENA migration studies and opened up new avenues for research.

Middle East Migrations

The Khayrallah Center hosted an international conference on Middle Eastern and North African migrations, highlighting the work of scholars who opened new paths of inquiry and shed light on neglected subjects, as well as proposing methodological innovations and offering perspectives on the field’s development.

New Perspectives on Middle East Migrations

This conference created space for new perspectives on the past and present of migration to, from, and through the Middle East, bringing together a host of disciplines, from history, anthropology, geography, and sociology to comparative literature and cultural studies, and from refugee studies to political economy and settler colonial studies.

The Khayrallah Center and the Center for Regional Food Studies (University of Arizona) hosted an international conference titled From ‘Mjaddarah’ to ‘Fatti de Luxe’: Food and Middle Eastern Diasporas at North Carolina State University. This conference was partially funded by Empire Eats.

Bodies in Motion: Middle East Migrations

The Moise A. Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies hosted an international conference titled Bodies in Motion at North Carolina State University. This conference was intended to enrich scholarly narratives of migration by reflecting upon bodies in movement and the lived experiences of men and women who have migrated from, to, and in what came to be called the Middle East.
