Searching for a person or family?
Start with the US Census Database to find individuals and households in U.S. censuses from 1880-1950. If your person or family member owned a business, check the Syrian Business Directory to find merchants, business owners, or businesses. If you think the person may have appeared in newspapers, try ArabicSearch.
To see content from families that have donated directly to our archives, check ArchivesSpace or view Omeka Digital Collections to see photographs, documents, and more.
Which resource should I try first?
Researching a town or place?
Start with ArabicSearch to find and translate mentions of the town in our repository of North and South American Arabic newspapers. For residents of a specific town or place, utilize the US Census Database to see a list.
You can search Omeka Digital Collections for visual media from specific regions, towns, or time periods. Or, for specific businesses in a town, use the Syrian American Business Directory.
Which resource should I try first?
Looking for a photograph or document?
If you’re looking for a photograph, head to the photos tag on Omeka Digital Collections to browse through multiple collections. For documents, check out Fihris for Arabic manuscripts, ArabicSearch for Arabic newspapers, and Omeka for all other documents.
Want a specific archival collection?
